It is a popular belief that technology’s role in our society is to make our lives easier. Companies spend billions of dollars in advertising
their products so that people would buy it. And, when we do, boy, do we make sure that we milk it for all its worth! Just like Cable TV, in general. Nothing is more comforting than having a plethora of options when it comes to watching TV, and since HD TVs are penetrating markets today, most owners ask: will having an HD cable box be very beneficial?
An HD cable box or cable boxes in general, are devices which transforms a non-cable ready TV to one that is peppered with channels and shows. This is particularly beneficial if you want to maximize the television that you bought. Its task is to convert a television channel from those that are transmitted over the CATV wire. This is done because the basic converter box is considered to be passive and usually does not communicate back to the carrier. What it does is to simply tune the channels that are being transmitted over the wire with the goal of re-transmitting it to a TV or alternative video device on a standard broadcast frequency which is usually selected by the customer and may be locally unused as a frequency.
One concern that comes up whenever this device is talked about is the difference between buying your own HD cable box and renting one. The answer is fairly simple – you should consider getting one. When you buy your own HD TV, it will usually include the HD tuner which will let you receive HD broadcasts from your cable provider. Bear in mind though that since you’ll be getting available stations on the “basic extended” tier from your cable provider, you will always be dependent on every price range that your provider will give you.
Also, when your cable provider re-prices their services, some of the programs that were previously available on your current tier will be moved to a low-end digital tier. However, this hasn’t stopped people from having their own HD cable box, as it usually provides its users multiple options in television markets. This means that it will work despite not having television antennas, although usual interference with the TV’s reception still could occur.
Now should you decide to get your own cable box, you also need to keep in mind that cable providers are supported by law to the ownership of set-top box hardware. You also have to be careful about buying used cable boxes, especially from Internet sites that offer secondhand and slightly used models. Most of the time, these are stolen or unreturned cable boxes that are bound specifically to a cable service and most likely will not work with your own provider, if you live outside its original area.
At the end of the day, comfort is a legitimate motivation in owning your own HD cable box. As a customer, however, you have to make sure that your activities are within the bounds of law.
